ディスクメモリは他のメモリに比べて種々の特徴があり，他のメモリと相補的な関係にある。更にディスクメモリの中でも光ディスクと磁気ディスクは補完的な関係にある。
今後，各メモリ性能の向上要求は高まる一方であるが，メモリのすみわけは，データ圧縮技術，ネットワークインフラ，著作権保護技術，コンテンツ配信技術などの技術進展の影響を受けつつも，最終的にはユーザビリティの観点から決まっていくものと思われる。
