現在，DVDが普及期を迎えている。その一方，画質を落とす事無くデジタル・ハイビジョン放送を記録可能な次世代光ディスクBlu-ray Discがデジタルハイビジョン放送の本格化と大画面フラット・パネル・ディスプレイの普及にともなって，世の中の注目を集めている。
本稿ではこのデジタルハイビジョン放送，現行アナログ放送，デジタル・ビデオカメラの映像データを高画質で記録することができるBlu-ray Discのアプリケーション規格とファイル・システム規格の概要について解説をする。
