多接合型III-V族化合物太陽電池は,太陽電池の中で最も効率が高く,宇宙用太陽電池に適している。光エネルギーの有効活用により飛躍的に特性が改善され,耐放射線性も優れている。しかし,高価,重い,割れ易い等の短所もあり,低価格の宇宙用シリコン太陽電池と棲み分けて使われる。

 Multijunction III-V compound solar cells are suitable for space use because of the highest efficiency of all solar cells and the excellent radiation tolerance. Efficiency of the compound solar cells has been vastly improved by using multijunction structure, which effectively converts wide range of photon energy into electric power. On the other hand, they have some shortcomings such as being expensive, heavy and easy to break. These facts require a careful examination before determining the solar cell material. The examination should include a comparison with Si solar cells which features cost effectiveness.
